Donaghadee lighthouse was built in limestone having a height of 16 metres and constructed in the year 1820 to accommodate the mail ships between Portpatrick in Scotland and Ireland it was popular in the 1600 to 1900 century before Larne began to overtake it due to easier access for shipping it is the shortest crossing route to Scotland being 22 miles from coast to coast.
